ChatGPT Blamed for Spanish Coach’s Dismissal in Russia

Robert Moreno’s tenure as coach of FC Sochi in Russia ended amidst unusual circumstances, with reports suggesting the excessive use of the AI platform, ChatGPT, played a significant role in his dismissal. The story has sparked debate about the appropriate use of artificial intelligence in professional sports.

According to reports, the Spanish coach was relieved of his duties following a string of poor results. The team secured only one point in seven matches, leading to his departure last September. However, the narrative took a strange turn when allegations surfaced regarding Moreno’s over-reliance on ChatGPT for making crucial tactical and strategic decisions.

Andrei Orlov, former Sporting Director of FC Sochi, claimed that Moreno was “deeply impressed” by ChatGPT. He allegedly used the AI to plan training sessions and make decisions that were perceived as illogical. One incident involved a 7 AM training session before a match in Khabarovsk, following AI’s recommendation. Players were also instructed to stay awake for 28 consecutive hours, causing widespread discontent and raising questions about the coach’s methods. The reliance on AI even extended to player recruitment, further fueling criticism as the team was relegated.

Moreno has vehemently denied these accusations. He dismissed them as inaccurate information spread by a former club official who had left before his own departure. He insists that there is no truth to the claims that he used ChatGPT to such an extent, calling the allegations unfounded.

The controversy surrounding Moreno’s departure highlights the growing unease and uncertainty surrounding the integration of advanced technologies like AI in professional sports. While AI offers potential benefits, questions remain about its ethical and practical implications, particularly regarding decision-making and the potential displacement of human expertise.
