Early Retirement Terms Defined for Education Sector Employees

Algiers, January 26, 2026 – A new executive decree has been issued outlining the conditions for early retirement eligibility for employees within the national education sector. The decree, identified as Executive Decree No. 26-74, dated January 14, 2026, was published in the Official Gazette, clarifying the procedures and criteria for specific categories of education personnel to access retirement pensions before reaching the standard retirement age.

According to the decree’s provisions, employees belonging to particular roles within the education sector – including teachers, professors, supervisors, school directors, and inspectors – are granted the right to apply for retirement starting at the age of 57 for men and 52 for women. To qualify, applicants must meet all legal requirements for receiving a retirement pension and be actively employed at the time of application.

The decree stipulates that employees seeking early retirement must submit a signed and dated application to their respective educational institution during the first three months of the academic year. Crucially, the decree explicitly states that the employing institution cannot reject an eligible employee’s request for early retirement, and the application must be retained in the employee’s administrative file.

Furthermore, the decree addresses the issue of pension reevaluation, clarifying that pensions already finalized will not be subject to revision should the retiree resume paid employment after their retirement date.

This new decree aims to streamline the career path for employees in the national education sector, taking into account the unique characteristics of educational roles and providing a clear and defined legal framework for accessing early retirement benefits.
