Agriculture Minister Vows Support for Farmers Amid Mechanization Losses

Algiers, January 27, 2026 – Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Yassine Walid has reassured farmers of the ministry’s commitment to supporting them in modernizing their agricultural equipment.

Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the National Scientific Council for Food Security, held at the National Chamber of Agriculture in Mohammadia, Minister Walid acknowledged significant losses in certain crops due to issues related to mechanization.

“We are seeing considerable losses in agricultural production linked to mechanization, specifically what are known as post-harvest losses,” the Minister stated. He further elaborated, “Various products are experiencing substantial losses, ranging from 20 to 30 percent in some sectors.”

Minister Walid emphasized President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s focus on the importance of modernizing agricultural machinery, reiterating his ministry’s readiness to assist and support farmers in this endeavor. “As a ministry, we are prepared to accompany and support all farmers in updating their mechanization practices, taking into account the opinions of experts in the field,” he affirmed.

Furthermore, Yassine Walid stressed that the sector’s new strategy is based on the principle that “every dinar spent must have a real impact on production.” He explained, “One of the objectives is to formulate effective government policies, ensuring that every dinar invested translates into tangible gains in output.”

It is worth noting that President Abdelmadjid Tebboune presided over a working meeting dedicated to agricultural mechanization on Monday, January 19, 2026. During this meeting, the President decided to establish specialized cooperatives for renting agricultural equipment of all types to farmers, with the aim of expanding cultivated land areas and increasing the productivity of national agricultural output. President Tebboune also decided to create a National Council for Agricultural Mechanization.
