Algeria Grapples with Road Accidents, Gas Poisoning Surge

Algiers – Algeria has witnessed a concerning spike in road accidents and gas-related incidents over the past week, resulting in a significant number of casualties. According to a statement released by the General Directorate of Civil Protection, 25 people lost their lives and 1189 sustained injuries of varying degrees in 1051 road accidents across several provinces between January 18th and 24th.

The province of Boumerdes was particularly affected, reporting 4 fatalities and 51 injuries from 41 road accidents, making it the region with the highest number of casualties during the specified period.

In a related development, Civil Protection units responded to numerous cases of carbon monoxide poisoning, rescuing 133 individuals who suffered from asphyxiation due to gas leaks from heating appliances and water heaters. Tragically, 18 deaths were recorded across the provinces of Skikda, Constantine, Djelfa, Annaba, Bejaia, Tipaza, Khenchela, and Oum El Bouaghi due to carbon monoxide inhalation.

Firefighting units also tackled 439 fires, including residential, industrial, and miscellaneous incidents. The highest number of interventions were recorded in Algiers (64 fires), Annaba (27), and Blida (23).

Furthermore, Civil Protection services carried out 7218 interventions in various operations, rescuing 650 individuals from dangerous situations and providing first aid to 6453 others. These efforts are part of an ongoing commitment to protect lives and property throughout the country.

These alarming figures underscore the critical importance of adhering to road safety regulations and ensuring the proper maintenance of heating and gas appliances within homes to prevent further loss of life. Vigilance and preventative measures are essential to mitigate the risks associated with both road accidents and gas-related incidents.
