Severe Weather Alert: High Winds Expected Across Algeria

Algiers, Algeria – Algeria is bracing for a period of severe weather, with strong winds expected to impact much of the country over the next two days. Meteorological services have issued a warning about potentially dangerous conditions, with wind speeds predicted to reach up to 120 kilometers per hour. Authorities are urging citizens to take precautions and remain vigilant.

In response to the weather alert, the Ministry of National Education has announced the suspension of classes across numerous provinces. This decision, effective immediately, impacts all educational levels and follows directives issued by the Ministry of Interior, Local Authorities, and Transport. The measure aims to ensure the safety of students and school staff.

The period of heightened alert begins at 3:00 PM on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, and is expected to last until Thursday, January 29, 2026. Authorities anticipate that the high winds could pose a significant risk to road traffic and infrastructure.

The school closures affect a wide range of provinces spanning western, central, eastern, and southern Algeria. These include, but are not limited to: Oran, Algiers, Blida, Tipaza, Chlef, Bejaia, Tizi Ouzou, Setif, Constantine, Annaba, Batna, Djelfa, Biskra, Laghouat, M’Sila, Souk Ahras, and Tebessa.

The Ministry of Education emphasized that the suspension of classes on Wednesday and Thursday, January 28th and 29th, is a proactive measure to safeguard students and the educational community, preventing potential accidents caused by the strong winds.

Authorities are advising citizens to exercise extreme caution, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay informed about weather updates.
