Media reports and video footage indicated that powerful explosions occurred in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas, at dawn on Saturday. Witnesses reported hearing loud noises and seeing aircraft and at least one column of smoke rising in the capital, in addition to a power outage in the southern part of the city near a major military base.
Powerful explosions and sounds resembling the roar of flying aircraft were heard starting at approximately 02:00 local time (06:00 GMT). Images of large fires and smoke emissions were posted on social media platforms, though the exact location of these explosions, likely in the east and south of the capital, could not be determined.
The cause of these sounds remains unknown, occurring amid tensions in the Caribbean region and threats from the U.S. President to launch strikes against Venezuela. Donald Trump has repeatedly threatened to carry out ground operations in Venezuela in an attempt to pressure President Nicolas Maduro to step down.
Reports indicate that at least seven explosions were heard in the capital. Additional reports mentioned explosions in the port of Caracas and the sound of warplanes flying over the city. A power outage was also reported in an area near a military base.
