6.5-Magnitude Earthquake Leaves Two Dead in Mexico

Two people were killed and dozens injured after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake struck southwestern Mexico. Numerous homes near the epicenter on the Pacific coast were destroyed, causing panic that sent millions into the streets and led to the evacuation of the presidential palace.

According to local media reports, the earthquake occurred at 07:58 local time (13:58 GMT), prompting residents of the capital to evacuate their homes. President Claudia Sheinbaum was also forced to evacuate the presidential palace during her regular morning press conference when earthquake sirens sounded; she returned with the attending journalists a few minutes later.

Sheinbaum stated that the epicenter was located 15 kilometers from San Marcos in the southern state of Guerrero, approximately 230 kilometers from Mexico City. She noted that preliminary reports indicate no major damage in Mexico City or Guerrero.
