New Mechanisms to Achieve Balance in the Poultry Market

Minister of Agriculture Yacine El-Mahdi Oualid revealed that his department is currently working, in partnership with professionals, to find mechanisms capable of creating a balance between market stability to suit the citizen’s purchasing power and avoiding losses for breeders, enabling them to continue their investments.

The Minister’s remarks came on Monday during a working visit to the province of Setif, where he oversaw the opening of the third edition of the International Poultry, Livestock Feed, and Veterinary Exhibition, which saw the participation of more than 85 national and foreign exhibitors, reflecting the dynamics of this strategic branch.

During his tour of the various pavilions of the exhibition, the Minister was briefed on the development recorded in the poultry farming branch, particularly in the areas of production techniques, equipment, veterinary health, production of biological inputs and feed, as well as the increasing reliance on scientific research and methods to improve productivity.

Yacine Oualid praised the level of efficiency achieved by the poultry branch in recent years, thanks to significant investments by the private sector, stressing that the state will continue to support this vital activity due to its pivotal role in enhancing food security and creating added value for the national economy.

For their part, professionals in the branch praised the measures recently taken by the Ministry to enable the sector to overcome the difficult stage it experienced due to fluctuations in feed availability, as additional quantities of yellow corn amounting to 1.125 million tons were imported during the months of December and January, contributing to market stability.

In the same context, it was decided to establish a strategic stock of imported and locally produced corn to secure the supply for breeders and feed producers for a period exceeding three months.

The Minister stressed that achieving the desired balance requires the stability of the feed market and the regulation of biological inputs, especially poultry parents, while involving professionals in decision-making related to the import of these inputs, taking into account the locally produced quantities that are witnessing an upward trend thanks to private sector investments.

Regarding animal health, Yacine Oualid explained that the sector is currently working on preparing a regulatory framework that allows the private sector to open veterinary analysis laboratories, which would create new jobs and enhance health support for breeders, in addition to working on establishing an order for veterinarians as essential partners in developing the sector.

On the sidelines of the visit, the Minister of Agriculture inspected a demonstration field in the central region of Setif province belonging to a cereal seed multiplier, which is part of the network of fields concerned with following the technical path for major crops, supervised by engineers and technicians from the regional station of the Technical Institute for Field Crops.

On-site, the Minister observed the positive results achieved thanks to adherence to the correct technical path, along with the rainfall witnessed in the region, reflecting the importance of technical supervision in increasing agricultural production yields.
