Algeria elected Vice-Chair of UN committee to combat crimes against humanity

Algeria was elected by acclamation at the United Nations headquarters in New York to the position of Vice-Chair of the Preparatory Committee for the United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity, representing the African Group.

This election took place during the first session of the Preparatory Committee, held from January 19 to 30, 2026, at the UN headquarters in New York.

This election is an acknowledgment of Algeria’s active role and significant standing in international forums, particularly in the fields of promoting international justice, respecting international law, and defending human rights, as well as its contribution to supporting just causes worldwide.

The committee aims to prepare for the United Nations Conference of Plenipotentiaries on the Prevention and Punishment of Crimes Against Humanity, scheduled for 2028-2029. This conference will be tasked with drafting an international convention to prevent and punish crimes against humanity, such as colonialism, slavery, apartheid, forced displacement, and other grave violations affecting human dignity.
