First Leadership Change in the National Union of Algerian Women in a Quarter Century

The National Union of Algerian Women saw its first leadership change in over 25 years on Thursday. The union’s 13th congress endorsed Halima Lakhal as Secretary-General, succeeding Nouria Hafsi, who led the organization for a quarter of a century.

The congress proceedings also included the approval of the union’s work program for the upcoming period and the election of members of the national office, as part of efforts to strengthen the union’s structure and modernize its objectives.

According to the final statement of the congress, the union affirmed its determination to strengthen the support of Algerian women for state institutions and to continue their activist role, especially during the current pivotal stage in Algeria under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The statement also praised the President’s efforts in advancing the national economy across various levels, alongside developments in digital transformation, the consolidation of social justice values, the achievement of equity, and the fight against corruption.

Former Secretary-General Nouria Hafsi posted on social media congratulating her successor, Halima Lakhal, stating: “With great pride and honor, I received the endorsement of the virtuous sister and distinguished activist Halima Lakhal as Secretary-General of the National Union of Algerian Women.”

She also expressed confidence in the union’s future under the new leadership, noting that it had previously been “heading toward the unknown and threatened with collapse,” according to her statement.
