Prime Minister Saifi Gharib has issued instructions to the various entities involved in the Annaba port expansion project, specifically the construction of the mining pier within the integrated phosphate project, emphasizing strict adherence to completion deadlines.
The Prime Minister arrived in Annaba on Saturday morning for a working and inspection visit to monitor the progress of the expansion works. This visit aligns with the directives of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune regarding the necessity of accelerating the construction of the mining pier.
During the visit, the Prime Minister received a detailed technical presentation on the progress of the works, covering various implementation stages, contractual deadlines, and measures taken to ensure compliance with approved technical standards.
Saifi Gharib stressed that the project must be completed by the end of 2026, highlighting its strategic importance and its role in economic diversification and the gradual reduction of dependency on hydrocarbons.
The Prime Minister also directed the participating companies to strictly adhere to deadlines, respect the terms of reference, and mobilize the necessary human and material resources to ensure the delivery of the mining pier within the specified timeframe and according to established quality and safety standards.
The mining pier under construction will be dedicated to receiving and processing approximately 10 million tons of phosphate and phosphate products annually. These materials will be transported via the eastern mining railway line as part of an integrated logistics system connecting production sites to export facilities.
Connecting the Oued El Hadba phosphate mine in Tebessa province to the port of Annaba via a modern double-track railway is expected to reduce export transport costs, improve the efficiency of the national phosphate chain, and enhance the competitiveness of Algerian products in international markets.
This project is of significant strategic importance as it supports the national phosphate industry and enhances the capacity of Annaba port to accommodate large vessels dedicated to transporting phosphate and its derivatives to foreign markets.
The project includes the construction of a base platform, the extension of the port’s main breakwater by 1,400 meters, and the creation of a 1,600-meter-long mining pier with a depth of 16 meters. It also involves the development of 82 hectares of backyards and dredging the basin to the required depth.
This structural project is expected to strengthen national infrastructure, support the economy, create direct and indirect jobs, and stimulate economic activity in the country’s eastern region, in implementation of the directives of the high authorities.
