Medvedev’s message to Trump regarding Greenland

Dmitry Medvedev, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council, has warned the United States that the residents of Greenland could vote to join Russia “if it does not act quickly,” at a time when Germany confirmed it does not expect American military action on the island.

The Interfax news agency quoted Medvedev as saying that “the residents of Greenland may vote to join Russia if U.S. President Donald Trump does not move quickly to annex the Arctic island.”

According to the agency, Medvedev, the former Russian president, stated that “Trump should hurry; according to unverified information, a surprise referendum could take place within a few days, in which all 55,000 residents of Greenland could vote to join Russia, and after that, it’s over—no new small stars on the American flag.”

The Kremlin has not commented on Trump’s renewed efforts to annex Greenland, but it described the Arctic as a region of national and strategic interest for Russia, stating last year that it is closely monitoring the “exciting” debate over Greenland.
