Ahmed Mokrani, Director General of Market Regulation and Supply at the Ministry, announced the import of more than 144,000 head of sheep and 46,000 head of cattle for slaughter in preparation for the holy month of Ramadan.
Mokrani explained on Thursday that the operation includes licensing the Algerian Red Meat Company (ALVIAR) and the Mediterranean Cold Storage Public Economic Enterprise (FRIGOMEDIT) to import approximately 144,000 head of live sheep and over 46,000 head of cattle, which will be processed in certified slaughterhouses.
The official added that private operators have also begun importing 21,000 tons of vacuum-packed red meat from Brazil to bolster national supply and ensure market stability. He noted that coordination is underway with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to prepare a distribution plan covering various provinces across the country.
He also confirmed that essential consumer goods, particularly oil, sugar, semolina, and flour, will be available during Ramadan, noting that the prices of some vegetables have stabilized or decreased due to improved production.
Regarding oversight, Mokrani indicated that approximately 85% of the sector’s agents, totaling more than 9,000, have been mobilized to monitor markets and combat fraud, alongside the deployment of fixed and mobile laboratories to analyze samples throughout the week.
