Algeria Moves to Expand List of Countries Supplying Sacrificial Animals

Minister of Agriculture Yacine Oualid held a coordination meeting on Thursday to implement the President’s directives to import one million head of sheep in preparation for Eid al-Adha.

According to a ministry statement, the meeting emphasized the importance of benefiting from the 2025 sacrificial animal import experience to improve performance and overcome previous shortcomings. Decisions included expanding the list of supplier countries, concluding new health agreements, and chartering specialized livestock transport vessels.

The statement added that technical teams will be dispatched immediately to supplier countries to verify health guarantees, and the number of quarantine points will be doubled compared to last year.

The private sector will be involved in transporting the animals from ports to various provinces, alongside the introduction of new mechanisms to organize the sales process.

Finally, a national committee comprising the secretaries-general of the relevant sectors has been formed to fully supervise the implementation of this operation.
