The Minister of Communication, Zouhir Bouamama, presided today, Monday, at the Hotel El Djazair in the capital, over the awards ceremony for the fifth edition of the National Environmental Journalism Competition. During the event, winners were crowned and the best media content related to the environment and conservation methods was honored. In a speech delivered on the occasion, the Minister congratulated the winners and participants, emphasizing that the true importance of this competition lies in the necessity of an “urgent contribution” to address environmental risks.
Bouamama revealed concerning figures, noting that 25% of the world’s population will be threatened by real environmental risks by 2050, which necessitates the unification of international and national efforts. The Minister of Communication explained that the press and civil society constitute the cornerstone in implementing the environmental policies approved by the government under the patronage of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.
He added that the President attaches utmost importance to “comprehensive security,” of which combating climate change is a prominent pillar. He cited concrete measures such as the rehabilitation and expansion of the Green Dam by millions of hectares and the strategic shift toward seawater desalination. In the context of promoting the sector, the Minister expressed his optimism regarding the establishment of specialized “environmental journalism,” describing it as a positive trend in the national press.
Bouamama stressed that “the specialized journalist is the most qualified and the closest to conveying the citizen’s concerns and warning them of what threatens them.” The Minister revealed figures reflecting his sector’s efforts in this field, announcing the training of 700 journalists from both public and private sectors in the environmental field. He emphasized: “The Ministry of Communication’s adoption of journalist training is a priority and a permanent pillar in our work program.”
The Minister concluded his speech by affirming that the Ministry of Communication will continue to support initiatives that raise the level of environmental awareness, believing that the media is not just a transmitter of news, but an essential actor in the battle of national construction and the protection of the resources of future generations.
