Senegal hands Morocco a bitter defeat in the 2025 AFCON final

The Senegalese national team was crowned champion of the 35th edition of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday evening, following a 1-0 victory over the host nation, Morocco.

The match’s only goal was scored by player Pape Gueye in the 94th minute of the first period of extra time, after the match ended in a goalless draw during regular time.

The match witnessed a major refereeing controversy involving Congolese referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo, who awarded a questionable penalty to the Moroccan team, leading to protests from the “Teranga Lions” players.

The Senegalese players walked off the pitch on the coach’s orders before their teammate Sadio Mané brought them back, and Senegalese goalkeeper Mendy managed to save the Moroccan penalty.

This marks the second title for the Senegalese national team, following their 2021 victory.
