Algeria and Indonesia: Parliamentary Dynamics to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

The Algerian-Indonesian Parliamentary Friendship Group concluded its official visit to the Republic of Indonesia following an intensive work program aimed at strengthening parliamentary cooperation and expanding the bilateral partnership.

The visit concluded on Thursday with a meeting between the Algerian parliamentary delegation, led by MP Benhamouda Mohamed Yazid, and the Indonesian Deputy Foreign Minister, Anis Matta. The meeting highlighted the historical, fraternal, and political relations between the two countries, which have paved the way for promising economic ties. These relations remain open to further development and diversification, given the resources and capabilities of both nations, as well as Algeria’s strategic geostrategic position in Africa and the Mediterranean.

The delegation began its visit in the city of Bandung, which hosted a significant historical milestone for the Algerian Revolution during the conference on April 24, 1955. In this context, the proposal to establish a twinning agreement between Bandung and the Algerian city of Guelma was widely welcomed and praised by the Indonesian side.

This rapprochement was further demonstrated during a meeting at the House of Representatives, where views were exchanged on various legislative issues of mutual interest. Both sides emphasized the need to support cooperation in higher education and scientific research, alongside diversifying economic partnerships.

Similar discussions took place during meetings with deputy ministers of higher education, tourism, and development and planning, focusing on the importance of enhancing sectoral cooperation and intensifying joint coordination.

Members of the friendship group were also received by the Secretary-General of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA). During the meeting, the head of the group delivered an official invitation from the President of the National People’s Assembly, Brahim Boughali, to visit Algeria.

This visit is expected to be followed by a reciprocal visit from the Indonesian Parliamentary Friendship Group to Algeria, with joint parliamentary consultations culminating in the signing of new cooperation agreements.
