Countries that will supply Algeria with sacrificial animals

Sofiane Bahbou, President of the National Federation of Red Meat Importers and its Derivatives, revealed the countries that will supply Algeria with a shipment of one million sacrificial animals this season. Bahbou explained in a media statement that Algeria will import sacrificial animals from several European countries, such as Spain and Romania, as well as some Latin American countries that have agreements with Algeria, such as Uruguay. He also did not rule out Australia joining the list of supplying countries.

The spokesperson noted that low price points are an important factor in choosing these countries, along with the compatibility of their breeds with Algerian breeds, ensuring meat quality and alignment with local needs.

On January 15, the Minister of Agriculture held a coordination meeting to implement the President’s directives to import one million head of sheep in preparation for Eid al-Adha. During the meeting, he emphasized the importance of benefiting from the 2025 sacrificial animal import experience to improve performance and overcome previous shortcomings.

Decisions taken included expanding the list of supplying countries and concluding new health agreements with them, in addition to leasing specialized ships for transporting livestock. It was also decided to immediately send technical teams to the supplying countries to verify health guarantees and to double the number of quarantine points compared to last year. The private sector will be involved in transporting the animals from ports to various provinces, with the introduction of new mechanisms to organize the sales process.
