How to avoid indigestion during Ramadan

Dr. Karima Benrehla, a physician at Mustapha Pacha Hospital in the capital, emphasized that the diet during the month of Ramadan must be balanced in terms of vegetables, fruits, proteins, and fluid intake, offering important advice to those fasting.

Regarding the ideal nutritional pattern, Dr. Benrehla explained that all types of food can be consumed but in moderate and balanced quantities. She recommended eating gradually by dividing food into three meals: one at Iftar, the second after Tarawih prayers, and the last during Suhoor to avoid indigestion.

Benrehla also recommended drinking sufficient amounts of water, distributed from the time of Iftar until Suhoor. She added that all fluids are counted, whether water, fruit, or soup, but water remains the best option to avoid dehydration.

In a related context, she noted that cases of indigestion increase during Ramadan due to consuming large amounts of food all at once at the Maghrib call to prayer. She stated that the stomach is an important organ with a limited capacity; therefore, eating should be gradual, starting with dates and milk or water, followed by soup, and then the main meal in moderate portions.

Furthermore, she called on those fasting to avoid excessive exposure to sunlight and to refrain from staying up for long hours, as a lack of sleep causes fatigue. This is particularly important for drivers, as many traffic accidents are linked to exhaustion and sleep deprivation more than to fasting itself.
