UN Security Council Adopts Resolution 2722 Amidst Algeria’s Abstention Over Houthi Attacks

The United Nations Security Council recently passed Resolution 2722, with 11 members endorsing and 4 abstaining, condemning the Houthi attacks on commercial and transport ships in the Red Sea and demanding an immediate halt to these assaults. Algeria, however, abstained from voting on the condemnation of these attacks, with its UN ambassador expressing regret over the neglect of two crucial elements in the draft resolution.

In explaining Algeria’s stance, Ambassador Ben Jamaa highlighted two primary concerns. First, he emphasized the need for caution in any military intervention in the region, especially in Yemen. Such interventions could jeopardize the efforts previously made by the United Nations and its agencies, including those of the UN Envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg. He noted that recent negotiations between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis had generated significant hope for resolving the conflict in Yemen.

Ben Jamaa further expressed Algeria’s concern over the resolution’s failure to acknowledge the clear link seen between the Houthi attacks on commercial ships and the ongoing situation in Gaza over the past three months. He emphasized the importance of the Security Council not overlooking the sentiments stirred in the Arab and Islamic world due to the indiscriminate bombing of innocent civilians. Algeria’s decision to abstain was influenced by the resolution’s omission of the death of 23,000 people in Gaza in the last three months.

Algeria’s abstention in the vote on Resolution 2722 reflects its commitment to a balanced and cautious approach to conflicts in the Middle East, prioritizing diplomatic efforts and acknowledging the broader context of regional tensions.
