Saleh Goujil, President of the Council of the Nation, received the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Algeria, Yookin Jan, for a courtesy visit on Tuesday. The Council of the Nation’s statement mentioned that the meeting provided an opportunity to review the bilateral relations between the two friendly countries and peoples, discussing ways to enhance cooperation and joint coordination, and open new horizons in line with the directives of both countries’ leaders, President Abdelmadjid Tebboune of Algeria, and the President of the Republic of Korea.

Goujil praised the fruitful economic cooperation between Algeria and Korea, especially in light of investment climate reforms and economic incentives introduced by President Tebboune, within the framework of the strategic partnership agreement between Algeria and the Republic of Korea.

He emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral parliamentary cooperation to match the level of existing collaboration in other areas. Goujil noted Algeria’s strong will to strengthen and consolidate cooperation and coordination with the Republic of Korea, particularly in the parliamentary field, through mechanisms of parliamentary diplomacy, including establishing friendship groups, training programs, expertise exchange, and organizing visits between the parliamentarians of the two countries.

This meeting was also an occasion to welcome the upcoming visit of “Jin Pyo Kim”, President of the National Assembly of Korea, to Algeria from January 20 to 22.

The sides also discussed the latest regional and international issues, including the tragic situation in Gaza and the occupied Palestinian territories. Goujil emphasized the international community’s responsibility towards the genocide faced by the Palestinian people amid global silence. He admired the Palestinian resistance against Israeli aggression, considering it a source of pride and legitimate until the establishment of their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital.

Goujil reaffirmed Algeria’s steadfast position in defending just causes worldwide, in line with Algeria’s foreign policy doctrine, which opposes colonialism and supports peoples’ right to self-determination. This commitment will be actively pursued in favor of both the Palestinian and Sahrawi causes during Algeria’s tenure at the United Nations Security Council, which began earlier this month.

Goujil called for intensified coordination between Algeria and Korea as non-permanent members of the UN Security Council to serve matters related to international security and stability and achieve global sustainable development goals.

The Ambassador of the Republic of Korea expressed satisfaction with the strong ties of cooperation and exchange between the two countries in economic, technical, technological sectors, as well as in agriculture, education, and training. He noted that the Korean government looks forward to expanding the current scope of cooperation with Algeria, especially given the welcoming environment and an encouraging economic climate.

He affirmed that Korea considers Algeria a strategic partner, a gateway for enhancing multilateral cooperation between Korea and the African continent, framed through the upcoming Korean-African Forum scheduled for early June.
