Prime Minister Seifi Gharib, alongside his Nigerien counterpart Ali Lamine Zeine, laid the foundation stone for the 40-megawatt “Solidarity” power plant project in the Gorou Banda area of the capital, Niamey. The ceremony was attended by members of both governments and representatives of the institutions involved in the project’s implementation.
This initiative comes as part of the Prime Minister’s official visit to Niger and on the occasion of the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien High Commission for Cooperation. The project aims to strengthen the strategic partnership between Algeria and Niger, supporting Niger’s national electricity grid and meeting energy needs for both domestic and industrial use.
The project was approved and implemented under the direction of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, following the results of the working visit by General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of the Republic of Niger, to Algeria last February. That visit aimed to enhance bilateral cooperation and accelerate the implementation of joint projects in the fields of energy and infrastructure.
The project involves the construction of a power generation plant in the Gorou Banda region through the installation of two gas turbines with a capacity of 20 megawatts each. This will increase the total production capacity by an additional 40 megawatts, contributing to grid stability and improving service quality to meet growing energy demand.
The project also includes the development of the electricity transmission and distribution network within the partnership between the Algerian National Electricity and Gas Company (Sonelgaz) and the Nigerien Electricity Company (Nigelec). This collaboration enhances the exchange of technical expertise and supports regional integration in the energy sector.
This initiative is part of a long-term bilateral cooperation strategy between Algeria and Niger, aimed at supporting sustainable development, enhancing regional stability, and opening new horizons for economic and structural partnerships between the two countries.
