Algeria-Niger: A Shared Vision for Building a United Africa

Prime Minister Saifi Gharib emphasized that the proceedings of the Algerian-Nigerien Joint Grand Commission for Cooperation provided an opportunity to confirm the convergence of the two countries’ views on numerous regional and international issues of common interest. Speaking at the conclusion of the commission’s work in Niamey, the Prime Minister stated that in light of the complex security challenges and profound transformations in the region, Algeria and Niger share a common vision based on building a united and solidary Africa capable of controlling its destiny, while working to consolidate peace, stability, and prosperity for its peoples.

In this context, Saifi Gharib added that continued coordination and consultation between the two countries is of paramount importance to face shared security challenges, particularly in the Sahel region. The Prime Minister reaffirmed Algeria’s determination to continue this close coordination to help contain hotspots of tension and enhance sustainable development efforts in the region. He also noted that the results achieved today meet shared aspirations, yet they represent a stage within a broader process that requires continued work and intensified efforts.

He added that the primary challenge in the coming stage lies in the effective and rapid implementation of the decisions and recommendations resulting from this session. In this framework, he stressed the necessity of establishing an effective mechanism to follow up on the implementation of the session’s outcomes, ensuring the practical realization of the roadmap drawn together.

During his speech, the Prime Minister stressed that the positive atmosphere allowed for an objective and realistic assessment of the bilateral cooperation path and laid the foundations for a renewed and ambitious partnership between the two countries. He noted that the goal of the proceedings was to translate this political dynamic into concrete projects and structural cooperation programs that serve the interests of the two brotherly peoples.

He continued by stating that significant progress was made during this session on several important files. The assessment of the progress of major joint projects—foremost among them the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, the Trans-Saharan Highway, and the fiber optic link project—confirmed a shared commitment to making these strategic projects essential pillars for enhancing regional integration and supporting the development process on the African continent.

It was also agreed to strengthen the legal framework governing bilateral cooperation through the signing of several new agreements and memorandums of understanding covering vital areas such as energy, mining, agriculture, health, culture, and training. These tools will provide modern and effective mechanisms to face future challenges and enhance cooperation between the two countries, the Prime Minister added.
