Algeria’s ‘Main Tendue’ Strategy Bolsters Regional Security with Aid to Niger
The Algerian Ministry of National Defense recently delivered a substantial military aid package to the Nigerian Army, comprising four helicopters with all their accessories, including two MI-24V and two MI-171 models, along with additional military equipment. This significant gesture was executed following direct instructions from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, who serves as the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces and Minister of National Defense. The aid was transported by an Algerian Air Force military aircraft and received at Niamey Airport by Brigadier General Salifou Mainasara, Chief of Staff of the Nigerian Air Force, who expressed profound appreciation from Niger's high authorities to the Algerian people and state.
This strategic delivery falls under Algeria's "Main Tendue" (Extended Hand) strategy, designed to reinforce cooperative relations, particularly in defense and security, with neighboring countries like Niger. The initiative underscores Algeria's doctrine that its national security is intrinsically linked to the stability and enhanced defensive capabilities of its neighbors. By strengthening the Nigerian Army, Algeria aims to bolster the fight against terrorism, organized crime, and ensure the continuity of field operations in the Sahel region, thereby securing shared southern borders and protecting vital regional strategic interests, including energy projects.
Algeria's proactive approach is part of a broader vision to establish regional security foundations, support the combat and logistical capacities of the Nigerian army for effective land and air space monitoring, and foster direct consultation channels between military leaderships. This aligns with Algeria's commitment to resolving African crises regionally through the continent's own capabilities, positioning itself as a guarantor of stability and regional integration, away from external interventions. This act of cooperation builds upon existing frameworks, including a 2023 military agreement for joint border patrols and broader military cooperation under the Joint Military Operations Body involving Mauritania and Mali.

Recent strategic partnerships with Niamey exemplify this, including solidarity programs in northern Niger's Agadez region through the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation. Economic cooperation projects such as the construction of a solar power plant, initiatives to establish food industry hubs, a vocational training center, and the opening of an Algiers bank branch in Niamey further demonstrate Algeria's multi-faceted commitment to regional prosperity and stability, alongside major infrastructural projects like the Trans-Saharan Road and the Nigeria-Algeria gas pipeline.
