The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Chargé d’Affaires of the French Embassy in Algeria was summoned to the ministry’s headquarters on March 26.
According to a ministry statement, the summons was issued to express Algeria’s protest, in the strongest terms, against a decision issued yesterday to renew the temporary detention of an Algerian consular employee for an additional year.
The statement added that the French diplomat’s attention was firmly drawn to the fact that the Algerian consular employee has been in temporary detention for a year, since April 2025, despite holding a status that grants him legal protection under the 1963 Vienna Convention on Consular Relations.
In the same context, the French diplomat was informed of Algeria’s strong condemnation of the shameful treatment the consular employee has been subjected to since his imprisonment, which was revealed during the first consular visit permitted on March 17.
Finally, the French Chargé d’Affaires was notified that this decision, which is difficult to justify or accept, will inevitably have consequences for the normal course of Algerian-French relations, the ministry statement concluded.
