Abdelmajid Zaâlani, the President of the National Human Rights Council, affirmed on Wednesday that Algeria has made “significant progress” in the field of establishing the right to education. The country has consistently prioritized education since its independence, following the principles of equal opportunities and free education.

Zaâlani made these remarks during an event held at Mahmoud Mentouri High School in the capital, commemorating the International Day of Education, celebrated this year under the theme “Learning for Permanent Peace,” as designated by the United Nations. He stated, “Algeria has achieved significant progress in establishing the right to education, consistently giving it priority since its independence based on the principles of equal opportunities and free education.” The celebration of this day aligns with the Council’s mission to disseminate human rights culture, starting from educational institutions.

In the same context, he mentioned the United Nations’ theme for the International Day of Education, emphasizing that the primary goal of human rights is to achieve stability, peace, and create an environment for secure living.

Abdelrazak Lekhal, the General Inspector of the Ministry of National Education, reiterated that Algeria has been working diligently since its independence, harnessing all material and human resources to ensure the right to education for every Algerian, enshrining this right in all constitutions and confirming its free and mandatory nature for everyone aged 6 to 16.

He emphasized the commitment to “provide the necessary structures and facilities to achieve this and ensure specialized human supervision in various fields.” The spokesperson pointed out that the ministry has hired “qualified teachers in physical education for primary education and established a general directorate for cultural and sports activities,” in addition to “equipping a significant number of primary schools with electronic boards and digitizing many operations.”
