Pope Leo XIV has commenced an official visit to Algeria today, Monday, following a formal invitation extended by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, in what marks the first stop of his African tour.
10:10 — Pope Leo XIV touched down at Houari Boumediene International Airport in Algiers.
10:15 — President Tebboune personally welcomed the Pope upon arrival at the airport.
10:26 — The Vatican leader was greeted with full state honors, including a 21-gun salute, the playing of both national anthems, and a ceremonial parade by units of the National People’s Army. Pope Leo XIV shook hands with senior state officials, while President Tebboune greeted the papal delegation.
The historic visit underscores Algeria’s stature as a key player in interfaith dialogue and its growing diplomatic influence on the African continent.
