Citizens of Annaba, eastern Algeria, turned out in large numbers this Tuesday to witness the visit of Pope Leo XIV to their city, describing the occasion as a landmark event that showcases Algeria’s identity as a nation of dialogue, tolerance, and civilizational coexistence.
Residents gathered since early morning to follow the papal visit, reflecting widespread enthusiasm across the city. Samir, 45, told dzwatch that the Pope’s visit is a major moment for Annaba and a powerful opportunity to highlight the true image of the Algerian people, known for their hospitality, generosity, and openness.
University student Tamer, 23, said the visit sparked his curiosity to learn more about other world cultures. Sonia, 38, expressed pride that Annaba is hosting such an international event, affirming that Algeria is a country of coexistence and this visit proves it. Salim, 30, noted the city’s remarkable energy these days and his personal investment in following this historic moment.
Near the Church of Saint Augustine, visitors stopped to photograph the historic site, while others across the old city followed the Pope’s movements — a testament to the local community’s collective embrace of this deeply significant religious and cultural event.
