UN Spokesman to dzwatch: ‘Algeria Has a Very Important Voice That Must Be Heard Loudly’

UN Secretary-General’s spokesman Stéphane Dujarric stated Friday that Algeria possesses a critically important voice on the world stage, noting that the country has just concluded its elected membership on the Security Council during which it was remarkably outspoken.

Speaking exclusively to dzwatch, Dujarric emphasized that Algeria spearheaded several regional and global issues throughout its Security Council tenure.

“The time has come for Africa to have a permanent seat on the Security Council,” Dujarric told dzwatch, adding that Secretary-General António Guterres cannot impose such reforms but strongly advocates for them both publicly and behind the scenes.

He stressed that the necessary changes to the Security Council must come from UN membership itself, and that nations feeling underrepresented should know that Guterres firmly stands beside them and champions their aspirations from within the organization.
