Algeria is taking bold steps to confront its water security challenges, with Minister of Water Resources Lounes Bouzegza stressing the urgent need to restrict the use of drinking water in industrial and agricultural irrigation activities.
Speaking exclusively to dzwatch, the minister outlined a sweeping new national policy built around the principle of ‘Protect Every Drop of Water’ — a strategic framework aimed at redistributing water resources according to vital priorities, guaranteeing citizens’ right to drinking water while sustaining long-term economic development.
The government is now moving decisively toward a modernized digital infrastructure for the water sector, introducing cutting-edge technologies to manage national water resources and combat waste and misuse. Major strategic projects, including seawater desalination plants, are already delivering results.
During a field visit to irrigation infrastructure in Annaba province, the minister reaffirmed strict adherence to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s directives on protecting water reserves from depletion and poor exploitation — signaling Algeria’s firm commitment to a sustainable and sovereign water future.
