US Think Tank Picks Algeria as the Most Influential Tech Power in North Africa and the Sahel

The Washington-based New Lines Institute for Strategy and Policy has identified Algeria as a rising regional powerhouse in artificial intelligence and technology, projecting it will become the most influential tech actor across the Maghreb and Sahel region within the coming years.

In an exclusive assessment shared with dzwatch, the institute highlights Algeria’s transformation from an energy giant into a multi-dimensional AI hub, driven by a comprehensive strategy spanning education, scientific research, cybersecurity, smart agriculture, and clean energy.

Algeria boasts Africa’s strongest computer science and AI academic base, with over 57,000 students enrolled across 74 master’s programs at 52 universities nationwide. The country ranks among Africa’s top five in scientific publications and targets training 500,000 ICT specialists by 2030.

Algeria’s AI market is forecast to surge from $500 million in 2025 to $1.7 billion by 2030. Algerie Telecom alone invested 1.5 billion dinars in AI, cybersecurity, and robotics startups in 2025, part of over 500 digitalization projects planned for 2025–2026.

The institute also noted Algeria’s strategic geopolitical autonomy and growing multilateral partnerships with China, Italy, and the United States as key strength factors cementing its regional tech leadership.
