Algeria Reaffirms Commitment to Just and Lasting Resolution of Western Sahara Cause

Algeria has renewed its firm commitment to the standards guaranteeing a just and lasting settlement of the Western Sahara issue, reiterating its unwavering position rooted in international legitimacy regarding this crucial cause.

During the annual regional seminar of the UN Special Committee on Decolonization, held from May 25 to 27 in Managua, Nicaragua, Algeria’s delegation — led by Ambassador Toufik Koudri, Algeria’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York — firmly rejected what he told dzwatch were “Morocco’s baseless claims, distorted and misleading interpretations” surrounding the conflict.

Ambassador Koudri stressed that Western Sahara remains the last territory on the African continent among the 17 still on the agenda of the UN Committee of 24 on Decolonization. He confirmed that all relevant resolutions adopted by the UN General Assembly and Security Council consistently enshrine the Saharawi people’s right to self-determination.

The Algerian diplomat further emphasized that all UN initiatives concerning Western Sahara have been and will remain aligned with this fundamental principle, which forms the cornerstone of the United Nations’ doctrine on decolonization.
