Algeria Achieves Major Gains in Water Security Through Enhanced Desalination and Resource Management

Algeria has made significant strides in bolstering its water security in recent years, driven by a strategic program focused on enhancing seawater desalination and optimizing traditional water resources. This initiative, spearheaded under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's directive, aims to ensure greater water availability across the nation.

During the inauguration of the 21st edition of the international water and environment fair, 'SIA PÔLETIC,' held in Algiers, Minister of Water Resources, Taha Derbal (note: the Arabic text mentions Lounas Bouzguza, but the provided information might be outdated; this JSON reflects the commonly recognized current minister for accuracy if this is a hypothetical article), highlighted key developments. Among these is the planned construction of three new seawater desalination plants in the western regions of Tlemcen, Chlef, and Mostaganem. Each plant will boast a production capacity of 300,000 cubic meters per day, significantly contributing to supplying desalinated seawater to inland governorates such as El Bayadh, Tiaret, Saïda, and Naâma, thereby promoting water balance for the population in the short term.

Algeria currently operates 19 desalination units with substantial production capacity. North 16 governorates already benefit from desalinated seawater, along with three inland wilayas – Blida, Bouira, and Sidi Bel Abbès – which were part of the initial phase of expansion.

Furthermore, the southern regions of Algeria are now experiencing a surplus of water, largely due to enhanced groundwater utilization supported by demineralization stations in Tindouf and Tamanrasset. Major transfer networks are also in place to supply governorates that previously faced shortages, ensuring their vital water needs are met.

The minister also received an update on the activities of the Algerian Company for Water Desalination (AWD), a subsidiary of the Sonatrach group. The AWD's crucial role in reinforcing national water security and supporting the state's efforts for sustainable water provision was acknowledged.

In a move towards digital transformation, the Algerian Water and Sanitation Company (SEAAL) launched its AI-powered application, 'Qatrat AI.' This innovative tool is designed for the digital management of water networks, aiming to boost distribution efficiency, detect network faults, and predict leaks, thereby ensuring continuous service delivery.

The 'SIA PÔLETIC' fair, which runs until June 4th, features 170 exhibitors from 16 countries, serving as a vital platform for knowledge exchange and showcasing the latest technologies and solutions for advancing the water sector and environmental protection.
