Canadian Wildfires Expand as Nearly 1,800 Residents Are Evacuated
Wildfires burning across the Canadian province of Ontario have expanded significantly, affecting approximately 735,000 hectares of land, up from nearly 650,000 hectares at the beginning of the week, according to media reports published on Tuesday.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford said during a press conference that the province was currently battling around 190 active wildfires. He added that nearly 1,800 people had been evacuated from sparsely populated communities in the northwestern part of the province as the flames continued to spread.
Ford explained that firefighting teams were making intensive efforts to contain the fires, protect residential areas and ensure the safety of local populations. Emergency services remain mobilized across the affected regions, while authorities continue to closely monitor weather conditions and the movement of smoke.
The impact of the wildfires has also reached Toronto, where thick smoke has caused a serious deterioration in air quality. Last Wednesday, the Canadian city recorded the worst air-quality levels among major cities worldwide due to smoke and pollution generated by the ongoing fires.
Authorities issued health warnings and advised residents, particularly children, elderly people and those with respiratory conditions, to remain indoors and limit outdoor activities whenever possible.
Since the beginning of 2026, wildfires across Canada have burned approximately 1.9 million hectares of forests, vegetation and other land. Although the total area affected remains below the record levels registered during the devastating 2023 wildfire season, the current situation continues to raise concern.
More than 800 active fires are still burning in different parts of the country, placing continued pressure on firefighting services and affected communities. Canadian authorities are working to bring the fires under control while coordinating evacuation, emergency assistance and environmental monitoring operations across the impacted regions.
