More Than 250,000 Evacuated as Wildfires Rage Across Spain and France
More than 250,000 people have been evacuated as massive wildfires continue to burn out of control across parts of Spain and France, forcing authorities to launch large-scale emergency operations amid extreme weather conditions.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that approximately 167,000 residents had been evacuated from areas near the city of Bordeaux and the Gironde region in southwestern France. An additional 30,000 people were ordered to leave their homes in the neighboring Landes department as firefighters struggled to contain the fast-moving flames.
In Spain, the Ministry of the Interior reported that the number of evacuees has risen to 70,000, an increase of 25,000 compared with previous official figures. The country’s most severe wildfires are concentrated near Madrid, where exceptionally high temperatures, strong winds and prolonged dry conditions have accelerated the spread of the fires.
Emergency services in both countries remain on high alert, deploying thousands of firefighters, aircraft and ground crews in an effort to protect lives, homes and critical infrastructure. Authorities have warned that weather conditions continue to pose significant challenges to firefighting operations.
The wildfires have become one of the largest emergency responses seen in Western Europe this summer, with officials urging residents in affected areas to comply with evacuation orders and follow safety instructions as efforts continue to bring the blazes under control.
