Solidarity Events Across Spain Highlight Support for the Sahrawi Cause

Spain has witnessed a series of solidarity events in support of the Sahrawi people, with political parties, civil society organizations and local authorities reaffirming their backing for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination.

On Friday, the United Left (Izquierda Unida) party in the city of Cádiz, in partnership with the Cádiz Association for Solidarity with the Sahrawi People, organized the third edition of a cultural solidarity evening dedicated to raising awareness of the Sahrawi cause. The event featured satirical folk poets and traditional carnival performance groups, using culture and art to promote solidarity and public awareness.

Pedro Jiménez, the party’s head of internal affairs in Cádiz, said the initiative pursued two objectives: maintaining support for the Sahrawi cause and reminding the public of Spain’s historical responsibilities regarding Western Sahara, while also helping finance the “Holidays in Peace” program, which allows Sahrawi children to spend the summer with host families across Spain.

Luis García, president of the Cádiz solidarity association, welcomed the cooperation with United Left, stressing that the event would both support the humanitarian program and keep international attention focused on what he described as the Sahrawi people’s legitimate rights after more than five decades without a referendum on self-determination.

Meanwhile, official receptions for Sahrawi children participating in the “Holidays in Peace” initiative continued across the Canary Islands, including Tenerife, Puerto del Rosario in Fuerteventura and Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. Similar events were also held in Valencia, where the regional parliament hosted the children and highlighted the humanitarian and political significance of the long-running program.
