Algeria and Senegal Seek to Expand Strategic Cooperation in Oil and Gas
Algeria and Senegal are looking to deepen their partnership in the hydrocarbons sector, with a particular focus on oil and gas exploration, production, refining, petrochemicals, training, and technology transfer.
Algerian Minister of State and Minister of Hydrocarbons Mohamed Arkab held talks on Sunday in Algiers with Senegal’s Minister of African Integration, Foreign Affairs and Senegalese Abroad, Cheikh Niang, who is on a working visit to Algeria.
The meeting was attended by the ambassadors of both countries, Sonatrach CEO Noureddine Daoudi, senior officials from the Algerian Ministry of Hydrocarbons, and members of the Senegalese delegation.
Discussions focused on the current state and future prospects of bilateral cooperation across the oil and gas value chain. Both sides emphasized the importance of strengthening the partnership between Algeria’s Sonatrach and Senegal’s national oil company, PETROSEN, building on the memorandum of understanding already signed between the two companies.
The two ministers also explored opportunities for Senegal to benefit from Algeria’s experience in developing its hydrocarbons industry, particularly as Senegal advances new oil and gas discoveries.
Training and knowledge transfer were also highlighted, with plans to strengthen cooperation between the Algerian Petroleum Institute and its Senegalese counterpart in order to develop technical expertise and support the growth of Senegal’s energy sector.
Other areas discussed included petrochemical industries, hydrocarbons transport, marketing of petroleum and gas products, regulatory frameworks, governance, petroleum data management, industrial safety, and environmental protection.
Arkab reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to strengthening African cooperation and South-South partnerships, while also calling for closer coordination within the African Petroleum Producers’ Organization, APPO.
For his part, Niang praised Algeria’s experience and Sonatrach’s technical expertise, expressing Senegal’s interest in expanding cooperation across multiple segments of the oil and gas industry.
