Following the emergency meeting of the UN Security Council called by Algeria regarding the recent attacks on refugee camps in Rafah, Algeria’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York distributed a draft resolution. This resolution calls for the occupying power to immediately cease its military assault and any other actions in Rafah.

The Algerian draft resolution demands an immediate ceasefire to be respected by all parties and condemns the indiscriminate targeting of civilians, including women and children, and civilian infrastructure.

The draft resolution reiterates that all parties to the conflict must comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law and international human rights law, particularly concerning the protection of civilians and civilian objects. It also emphasizes the need to stop depriving the Palestinian civilian population in Gaza of essential services and humanitarian assistance vital for their survival.

The draft resolution expresses deep concern about the dire humanitarian situation, including the spread of famine across Gaza, the harsh living conditions, and the severe suffering of the Palestinian civilian population, including those who have taken refuge in Rafah, many of whom have been forcibly displaced again.

This draft resolution follows the brutal and unjust assault by Israeli occupation forces on a Palestinian refugee camp in Rafah, resulting in over 45 martyrs, including children, infants, and women, as well as many severely injured individuals requiring treatment that is now unavailable in the sector due to the destruction of most healthcare facilities.

Notably, Algeria’s Permanent Representative, Ambassador Amar Benjamaa, confirmed to the press immediately after the Security Council’s closed session on Tuesday evening that Algeria would distribute a concise and decisive draft resolution to the Security Council members to halt the killing in Rafah.

The draft resolution is expected to be put to a vote by the Council members in the coming days, once the negotiation phase, which should be brief given the severity of the situation on the ground, is completed.
