Algeria Strengthens Position as EU’s Second Largest Gaseous Natural Gas Supplier
Algeria has reinforced its standing as the European Union's second-largest supplier of gaseous natural gas, according to recent data released by Eurostat for the first quarter of 2026. The latest figures indicate that Algeria accounted for 18.5 percent of the EU's total imports of natural gas primarily transported via pipelines, affirming its crucial presence in the European energy market. This places Algeria behind Norway, which held 54.4 percent of the market share, and notably ahead of Russia, which recorded a 9.8 percent share during the same period.
This strengthened market position represents a significant increase for Algeria, whose share of the EU's gaseous natural gas imports stood at 17.4 percent in 2025. The rise of 1.1 percentage points to 18.5 percent in early 2026 underscores Algeria's ongoing pivotal contribution to Europe's energy security framework.
