Air Algérie Leads African Airlines in Capacity Growth, Ranks Fifth Continent-Wide

Air Algérie demonstrated the strongest capacity growth among the ten largest African airlines in August 2026, according to recent statistics. The national carrier scheduled 825,900 seats for the month, marking a notable 16.8% increase compared to 706,900 seats programmed in August 2025. This significant expansion, representing an addition of 119,000 seats year-on-year, positions Air Algérie as a leading force in the continent's aviation sector.

This rate of progression distinguishes Air Algérie within the top ten African airlines classified by capacity, with no other carrier matching its substantial August growth. For context, Royal Air Maroc recorded a 13.2% increase in seat numbers over the same period, while Ethiopian Airlines, which holds the top position overall, registered a 10.9% growth. Air Algérie's performance underscores its rapid expansion and commitment to enhancing its service offerings across its network.

With its strong growth, Air Algérie now ranks as the fifth-largest African airline by capacity for August. The carrier's 825,900 programmed seats place it firmly among the continent's principal operators. Ethiopian Airlines maintained its leading position with 2.1859 million seats, followed by Safair at 984,700 seats, Egyptair with 922,600, and Royal Air Maroc at 868,100 seats. Air Algérie's inclusion in the top five signifies its continuous strengthening and increasing relevance in the regional and continental aviation landscape.

This observed increase in capacity is part of a broader trend, as Air Algérie had previously shown one of the highest progressions among African airlines in June, with an 11.2% capacity increase.
