Principled Approach Shapes Algerian Diplomatic Engagements
Algeria's diplomacy is characterized by balance, principle, and constancy, rooted in its determined struggle for independence. Since 1962, the nation has consistently upheld principles such as the right of peoples to self-determination, non-interference in internal affairs, peaceful conflict resolution, and non-interventionism. This foundation has established Algeria as a key actor and a pole of stability across the Mediterranean, African, and Sahel regions, recognized for its unwavering defense of oppressed peoples, including its principled stance on the Western Sahara question.
In recent years, Algerian diplomacy has renewed its strong regional and international presence, adapting from a strictly political approach to one that integrates economic interests, industrial partnerships, and investment attraction. Under President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, this strategy emphasizes mediation, the defense of historical principles, and active engagement in Africa to foster regional stability. This is demonstrated through tangible commitments, such as substantial investments in mining and energy infrastructure in Burkina Faso, power plant donations to Niger and Chad, and the establishment of partnerships with numerous African nations. Algeria has also launched significant infrastructure projects, including segments of the Trans-Saharan Road and the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, alongside initiatives like the Algerian Agency for International Cooperation for Solidarity and Development, funded with a $1 billion endowment for African projects.
Algeria's proactive role extends to continental forums, where it recently presided over the African Union's Peace and Security Council during August, leading consultations on governance, democracy, human rights, peace, and security. In this capacity, Ambassador Mohamed Khaled highlighted progress in strengthening coordination among AU bodies and advancing a common roadmap for African governance and peace architectures. Globally, Algeria has multiplied strategic partnerships with Europe, the United States, and Asia, solidifying its reputation as a reliable energy partner. As a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2024-2025, Algeria continues to advocate for international law and the rights of oppressed peoples, reinforcing its legitimate standing as an economic and diplomatic power in the region.
