Sonelgaz Explores Expanded Energy Partnership with Kazakhstan

On August 13, 2026, Anuarbek Akhmetov, Ambassador of the Republic of Kazakhstan to Algeria, met with Abderrahmane Sahri, President and CEO of the Sonelgaz group, in Algeria. Their discussions centered on the current state and future prospects of Kazakh-Algerian cooperation in the energy sector. The meeting also explored opportunities for implementing joint projects involving relevant companies from both nations.
Key areas of interaction identified during the discussions included electric power, gas infrastructure, energy technologies, and the modernization of production facilities. Special attention was also given to the development of renewable energy sources. Ambassador Akhmetov highlighted the significant potential for expanding mutually beneficial cooperation in the energy sector and presented the capabilities of Kazakh companies possessing relevant competencies and technologies.
Mr. Sahri, representing Sonelgaz, emphasized the mutual interest in establishing direct contacts between companies of the two countries, exchanging experience, and considering specific projects of mutual interest. Sonelgaz, as Algeria's largest state-owned energy group, plays a crucial role in providing the country with electricity and natural gas, with specialized companies under its structure handling electricity generation, transmission, distribution, renewable energy, engineering services, and the production of electrical and gas equipment. The parties confirmed their interest in further developing the partnership and agreed to continue contacts between relevant structures to implement joint projects.
