In a recent statement, Minister of Trade and Export Promotion Tayeb Zitouni emphasized that the activation of foreign trade cannot achieve its set goals without involving the diplomatic corps, which possesses national expertise and representation worldwide.

Speaking at a forum on “The Role of Business Councils in Enhancing Economic Diplomacy” held on Sunday at the El Aurassi Hotel, Zitouni stated that the activation of business councils has become an urgent necessity to enhance Algeria’s economic diplomacy. “It is no longer a secret that the power of nations is now measured by the strength of their economies,” he said.

The minister highlighted the impact of the “deep economic reforms launched by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune,” which have enabled Algeria to achieve an unprecedented economic boom in its history. “In just four and a half years, our national economy has achieved positive and tangible results, transforming Algeria from a country that imports all its needs to a producer and exporter of many goods,” Zitouni noted.

He explained that “all these reforms were not merely futile policies and procedures, but rather a translation of President Tebboune’s commitment to building a strong and sustainable economy capable of meeting the needs of the nation and its citizens and fulfilling their aspirations.”

During his speech, the minister underscored the role of business councils, stating, “The experiences of developed countries have proven that business councils play a pioneering role in strengthening economic relations among them. They are a mechanism that governments rely on to adapt to economic changes by monitoring and analyzing trade trends of companies, which call for adaptation to seize emerging opportunities in foreign markets.”

For this purpose, Zitouni added that “the role of business councils should not be limited to enhancing trade exchange but must extend to weaving and networking promising strategic partnerships.”

“Our objective assessment of the activity of 42 active business councils has clarified the necessity of reviewing the work of these councils, with the need to define the goals expected of them to contribute to establishing the foundations of intelligent diplomacy in the service of national development and institutions and investors worldwide,” the minister said.

During the forum, it was decided to organize workshops to develop future visions and strategic objectives, identify necessary mechanisms to overcome obstacles hindering the diplomatic role of these economic actors, and enhance their influence on the international stage.

In this context, the Minister of Trade announced the launch of a digital platform specifically designed to frame and activate business councils, ensuring interconnectivity between relevant sectors and bodies, and keeping economic operators informed of all updates and data.

Additionally, an agreement will be signed during the forum between the Algerian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Diplomatic Institute for International Relations to develop the knowledge of economic operators in foreign policy fields and qualify them according to the standards upon which economic diplomacy is built.
