Guidri Leads Meeting on International Medicine Supply Cooperation
The Algerian Minister of Pharmaceutical Industry, Wassim Guidri, chaired a technical meeting at the Ministry's headquarters to explore avenues for strengthening international cooperation in the supply of essential medicines. The session included key representatives from United Nations organizations: Katarina Johansson from UNICEF's Algeria office, Fanuel Habimana from the World Health Organization's Algeria office, and Hassiba Sayeh from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) office.
This gathering builds upon several significant initiatives, including the Minister's technical mission to UNICEF's supply division in Copenhagen last July. That mission specifically focused on studying a project for the establishment of a regional center in Algeria dedicated to supplying essential medicines produced locally. Additionally, the meeting follows up on and aims to implement the outcomes of the African Ministerial Conference on Local Production of Medicines and Health Technologies, which Algeria hosted in November 2025. This conference culminated in the adoption of the “Algiers Declaration,” outlining various initiatives designed to foster integration and cooperation among African nations in local medicine production, thereby contributing to continental health security and pharmaceutical sovereignty.
During the meeting, emphasis was placed on the importance of adopting a joint roadmap that incorporates practical measures for both the short and medium term. A shared work calendar for the 2026-2027 period is also set to be developed, preparing the groundwork for the supply of African markets with essential medicines manufactured in Algeria. Participants reaffirmed the critical need to continually enhance coordination, cooperation, and strategic partnerships between Algeria and its international collaborators. The discussions aimed to translate the results of the African Ministerial Conference into tangible projects and initiatives, further solidifying Algeria's pivotal role in bolstering health and pharmaceutical security across the African continent and strengthening regional integration within the pharmaceutical industry.
