Niger, Algiers Sign Public Works Cooperation Agreements

Algeria and Niger have concluded consultations in the public works and basic infrastructure sector, resulting in the signing of specific agreements and the adoption of a final joint action plan. This development signals the formal launch of cooperation programs focused on the ground, particularly in the transfer of expertise and technical training. The Algerian Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructure, Abdelkader Djellaoui, recently hosted a delegation from Niger led by Abdallah Ouma Ahmed, Secretary-General of Niger's Ministry of Equipment and Infrastructure.

The meeting provided an opportunity to monitor the implementation of outcomes from the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien Grand Joint Committee, which convened in Niamey last March. Discussions also advanced agreements made during the Nigerien Minister of Equipment and Infrastructure's visit to Algeria in June. Both parties reviewed mechanisms for executing the cooperation protocol signed between the two nations and followed up on memoranda of understanding established between Algeria's National Technical Control Body for Public Works and its Central Laboratory for Public Works, and their respective counterparts in Niger.

The newly agreed programs and partnerships are set to enhance cooperation between specialized technical institutions. Key initiatives include the launch of comprehensive training and qualification programs designed for Nigerien technical cadres across various domains of public works and construction. This strategic move is anticipated to bolster the transfer of Algerian expertise to Niger and forge broader avenues for technical partnership, thereby contributing significantly to the advancement of bilateral cooperation in the fundamental infrastructure sector.
