Ghazaouani Wins Second Term as President of Mauritania

The National Independent Electoral Commission of Mauritania has announced the victory of the incumbent President and candidate for a new term, Mohamed Ould Ghazaouani, in the presidential elections held last Saturday.

According to the provisional results announced by the Chairman of the Commission, Dah Ould Abdel Jelil, Ghazaouani secured the win by obtaining more than half a million votes (554,956), which corresponds to 56.12% of the votes cast by Mauritanian voters.

The second place was taken by candidate Biram Dah Abeid, who received 22.10% of the votes, equating to more than two hundred thousand votes (218,546). The third place went to Hamadi Sidi Mokhtar, the President of the National Rally for Reform and Development Party “Tewassoul,” who garnered 12.76% of the votes, amounting to more than one hundred and twenty thousand votes (126,187).

The total number of voters in the election exceeded one million (1,074,208) out of the 1.9 million registered on the electoral roll, with a participation rate of 55.39%.

The total number of valid votes in this election was nearly one million (988,413), while the number of invalid ballots was more than fifty thousand (53,787), representing 5% of the valid votes. Additionally, there were 31,608 neutral votes.
