LNG: Algeria Ranks Seventh Globally in Production Capacity

Algiers – Algeria has secured the seventh position globally in terms of liquefied natural gas (LNG) production capacity, with an output of 25.5 million tons per year as of the end of February, making it the leading African nation in this ranking.

According to a report by the International Gas Union (IGU), Algeria is ahead of Nigeria, which ranks eighth with a production capacity of approximately 22.2 million tons per year, and Egypt, which ranks tenth with 12.2 million tons per year.

The United States tops the list of countries with the largest LNG production capacity, with 91.4 million tons per year, followed by Australia with 87.6 million tons per year, and Qatar with 77.1 million tons per year. These three countries collectively hold more than half of the global production capacity.

Malaysia ranks fourth with a production capacity of 32 million tons per year, surpassing Indonesia, which ranks fifth with a capacity of 30.3 million tons per year, followed by Russia with 29.1 million tons per year. After Algeria and Nigeria, Trinidad and Tobago ranks ninth with 14.8 million tons per year, followed by Egypt in tenth place.

Global LNG production capacity rose to 483.1 million tons per year by the end of February. The average utilization rate of production capacity was around 88.7% last year, slightly down from the average of 89% in 2022.

Furthermore, according to the report, Algeria saw an increase in its LNG export volume by the end of 2023, recording an additional 2.88 million tons compared to 2022, raising its total exports to 13 million tons. This gives Algeria a 3% market share in the global market, placing it seventh worldwide.

The report also highlighted the key LNG trade flows between regions in 2023, noting that the exchanges between Algeria and Turkey (4.29 million tons) and from Algeria to France (3.20 million tons) were the first and third largest LNG exchanges between Africa and Europe, respectively.
