Algerian Investments Target Mali’s Gold, Lithium, Agro-Industry

The Algerian government is actively exploring strategic investment opportunities in Mali, marking a significant focus on economic diplomacy. A high-level working session held in Bamako on September 14, 2026, brought together Algerian Prime Minister Sifi Gherib and Malian Prime Minister Abdoulaye Maïga, along with their respective delegations. This meeting aimed to transform the Algiers-Bamako relationship into a key driver for sub-regional development, extending bilateral cooperation beyond traditional security and political matters.

Malian authorities used this platform to present a comprehensive overview of the country's economic potential, inviting Algerian operators and investors to engage with its untapped resources. While Mali is a known gold producer, particular attention was drawn to lithium, a crucial component for electric batteries. This resource represents a significant opportunity for Algerian companies specializing in extraction, mining transformation, and logistics. Beyond mining, Mali's vast arable lands present extensive possibilities for Algerian investment in the agro-industry sector.

Further strengthening economic exchanges, Mali's export promotion agency identified products such as mango, sesame, and cashew nuts for immediate export to the Algerian market, fostering mutually beneficial partnerships for the Algerian agro-food industry. The meeting also addressed critical infrastructure needs, with Mali's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure highlighting vital dossiers for regional integration. Energy development was a key topic, with Algeria, a continental energy leader, positioned to offer its expertise in electrical grids, renewable energies, and hydrocarbons to address Mali's energy deficit. Cooperation in higher education and scientific research was also acknowledged, building on Algeria's historical provision of scholarships to Malian students.

In response to these concrete opportunities, Algeria's Prime Minister Sifi Gherib proposed the immediate creation of specialized working groups. These expert committees will be tasked with translating the outlined orientations into tangible, "bankable" projects and commercial agreements. This proactive approach signals that Mali is a priority destination for Algeria's economic expansion within Africa, underscoring Algeria's commitment to transforming discussions into concrete actions for both public and private sector enterprises.
