National People’s Assembly Opens Session, Boufdah Calls for Unity
The National People's Assembly (APN) officially commenced its 2026-2027 ordinary parliamentary session on Wednesday, September 16, 2026. The public session was presided over by APN President Khalida Boufdah and attended by prominent figures, including the President of the Council of the Nation, Azouz Nasri, the President of the Constitutional Court, Leila Asslaoui, Prime Minister Seifi Gharib, and members of the government. During the opening, President Boufdah underscored the critical importance of national unity and called for broad, responsible public participation in the upcoming local elections, emphasizing their role in strengthening elected institutions and democratic principles.
In her address, Ms. Boufdah highlighted that parliamentary functions are a trust and responsibility, urging deputies to remain attuned to citizens' concerns and diligently advocate for their interests through legislative and oversight duties. She also commended President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's decisive actions in responding to recent fires and assisting affected citizens, recognizing these as demonstrations of the state's robust presence during crises. The President of the APN praised the Algerian people's solidarity and the mobilization of state institutions, which collectively showcased the nation's capacity to overcome adversities.
Ms. Boufdah stressed the necessity of enhancing legislative quality and drafting laws that align with economic and social transformations, particularly concerning investment, improving the business climate, and developing public and digital services. She affirmed Algeria's unwavering support for the Palestinian cause, advocating for the Palestinian people's right to freedom and statehood, and reiterated the nation's consistent position on the Western Sahara issue. Furthermore, Ms. Boufdah expressed support for President Tebboune's sovereign foreign policy decisions, including the severance of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, citing national security and Algeria's higher interests.
The APN President also commended the National People's Army for its role in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and acknowledged the security services' efforts in protecting citizens and combating organized crime, smuggling, and illicit drugs. She noted the importance of modernization within the parliament, advocating for the integration of technology and artificial intelligence to enhance legislative and oversight processes. Boufdah concluded by calling for intensified parliamentary diplomacy to project Algeria's voice and principles on regional and international stages, while also stressing the importance of strengthening ties with the Algerian diaspora.
