Houria Belhour Named Best Actress in Helsinki

Algerian actress Houria Belhour secured the Best Actress award at the third edition of the Helsinki Arab Film Festival in Finland. The recognition was for her compelling performance in the short film "Victim Zero," directed by Amine Ben Thamer and produced by Revoular, with support from the Ministry of Culture and Arts. An international jury commended Belhour's portrayal, noting its significant emotional depth and authenticity, which resonated strongly throughout the festival.

This accolade marks a new presence for Algerian acting in Northern Europe and draws attention to "Victim Zero," a film that delves into critical themes of addiction, human trafficking, and family breakdown within an intense dramatic structure. Belhour stated that the award is the result of rigorous psychological preparation for her character, a mother who endures the tragedy of losing her children to addiction. She emphasized that the brevity of a short film does not diminish the impact of a powerful role, asserting that an actor's success is intrinsically linked to team cohesion, the director's vision, and the producer's ability to navigate festival circuits. The Helsinki Arab Film Festival, as Finland's sole platform dedicated entirely to Arab cinema, aims to introduce local audiences to diverse narratives and foster dialogue between filmmakers and European viewers.

Minister of Culture and Arts Malika Ben Doudah extended congratulations to Houria Belhour, acknowledging the award as a celebration of Algerian artistic performance and a testament to the nation's rich creative talents. Belhour, in turn, dedicated her triumph to Algeria, her family, and her audience, expressing gratitude for the collaborative team. This award further enriches Belhour's extensive career in theater, television, and cinema, which includes participation in major festivals such as Venice in 2022 and Berlin in 2024. Her achievement underscores the capability of Algerian artistic productions to convey profound human experiences and gain international acclaim.
